FOSS - TCE
Note: Let’s contribute a bit to the Open Source
Advancing Free and Open Source Software at TCE: Introducing the FOSS-TCE Fund
Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) has shaped the modern software ecosystem—from operating systems and cloud infrastructure to AI frameworks and developer tooling. Today’s most valuable platforms are built on open collaboration, transparent innovation, and global participation. To embed this philosophy deeply within the next generation of engineers, we are launching a dedicated initiative: The FOSS-TCE Fund.
As an alumnus and a technology professional committed to open knowledge, I have been in discussion with Prof. Karthikeyan, TCE, and we are aligned on moving forward to support and scale FOSS-focused activities at the college.
To kickstart this initiative, I am committing ₹ 50,000 per year personally toward FOSS-TCE.
What is FOSS?
FOSS stands for Free and Open Source Software—software that is free to use, modify, share, and improve. The success of transformative tools and platforms—from Linux to Python, Kubernetes, Hugging Face Transformers, PostgreSQL, and Blender—demonstrates the power of open innovation and distributed contribution.

Mission and Utilization of FOSS-TCE Funds
The purpose of this fund is to empower students at TCE with early, hands-on, industry-relevant exposure to open-source technology and community contribution.
We plan to deploy funding toward the following initiatives:
- Teaching FOSS fundamentals, Linux, and open-source development practices for free, beginning from first year
- Training and mentoring students to contribute to real-world open-source libraries—such as TokSum (https://pypi.org/project/toksum/)
- Hosting FOSS + Generative AI weekend programs, workshops, and contribution sprints
- Procuring a mid-range GPU workstation for collaborative research in FOSS + GenAI
Our vision is to transform TCE into a hub for open-source excellence—where students not only learn technology but help build it. Students who develop the habit of contributing early gain stronger portfolios, deeper understanding, and confidence to collaborate with global engineering communities.
Call for Collaborators, Contributors, and Supporters
If you believe in open knowledge, shared progress, and accessible technical education, I invite you to join us. Your support—whether financial, advisory, or mentoring—can enable students to innovate and contribute to the technologies shaping the world.
